2023 Arizona Golf Overseeding Schedule

Overseeding in golf is the process of planting cool-season grass seed over existing warm-season grass during the fall season. The cool-season grasses used for overseeding in golf are typically ryegrass, fescue, and bluegrass. This process is done to maintain year-round green grass and to provide a better playing surface during the winter months, when the warm-season grass goes dormant.

Arizona golf overseeding involves preparing the existing warm-season grass by cutting it very short and removing the clippings. This is followed by spreading the cool-season grass seed over the warm-season grass, usually at a rate of 10-20 pounds per 1,000 square feet. The seed is then watered frequently to ensure it germinates and grows properly. Once the new grass is established, the warm-season grass will eventually go dormant and the cool-season grass will take over.

Overseeding is a common practice on golf courses in areas with warm climates, such as Arizona or Palm Springs. It is done to provide year-round playing surfaces and to maintain the aesthetic appearance of the course.
