Gold Canyon Golf Resort – The Getaway You’ll Want to Keep

By • Jan 31st, 2011

Gold Canyon Resort offers the perfect escape for a weekend staycation or for visitors from out of state. Gold Canyon’s location is remote and removed from the hustle-bustle of the big city of Phoenix and offers a serene and soothing option for those looking to get away.

With no shortage of good golf, good food and friendly faces, the Gold Canyon Resort should be your top choice for a weekend getaway.

The resort boasts 101 unique hotel rooms—what they call casitas—that offer a variety of amenities such as indoor and outdoor spas, wood burning fireplaces and private patios carved out of the foothills of the scenic Superstition Mountains. Only a short walk from the clubhouse and dining, staying in these casitas provides everything you could want in a weekend escape.

The casitas are cozy, quaint and romantic. They have a western ruggedness meets southern charm and sweetness feel to them. The perfect combination of class and homey. In the winter, the fireplace is a must-light, as it adds charm to the intimate and adventuresome experience. It feels as if you’re in a log cabin, creviced away for no one to disturb you. The prime rooms are located near the front of the resort and feature outdoor whirlpools.

People come to the Gold Canyon Resort to get away; for that unique experience and retreat. Staying on-site in a casita beats staying in a standard hotel room any day of the week.

On site, there are two 18 courses—Dinosaur Mountain and Sidewinder. Both heralded for their beauty and challenge, one can’t go wrong with either course. Both courses are some of the nicest in the valley; Dinosaur Mountain has 4.5 star rating by Golf Digest and Sidewinder is rated 4 stars. I highly recommend your days being filled with golf at these two courses—they are guaranteed not to disappoint.

If, by chance, golf isn’t your strong suit, the Gold Canyon Resort presents an array of other activities to enjoy. Hiking, biking, swimming, jeep tours, massage, spa services, a fitness center and numerous restaurant-dining options are all on site and at your disposal.

The Resort has three dining options that are all equally enjoyable yet distinct in the experience they provide.

If you’re looking for a filet or lemon pepper Mahi Mahi over linguini in a white wine sauce, I suggest you visit Kokopelli’s Restaurant. This eatery is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and serves the most titillating fine-dining dishes.

Choose from lunch menu items such as sandwiches, burgers and entrée salads. In the evenings, grab your wife and head to Kokopelli’s for steaks, seafood, pasta or poultry dishes. Kokopelli’s offers two signature items—the Pork Osso Bucco and Grilled Cajun Ribeye Steak—which are must-haves if you can’t decide what to get.

For a slightly more casual, just came off the golf course looking to wet your whistle type mood, I’d recommend grabbing a drink and an appetizer in the Bar and Grille. That’s where I spent my dining time at the Gold Canyon Resort—a pleasurable experience thanks to the staff.

Restaurant Manager Chris Barton serves up a specialty cocktail every week; a cocktail that he creates from the musings in his mind. He says he likes to keep things fresh and interesting, and that he mostly comes up with new drink specials to amuse himself. Take it from me, visitors appreciate his efforts.

Darcy Thomas waited on my father and I barside and told us what makes the atmosphere of the place are the really great people on site.

“There are tons of regulars here and [Gold Canyon Resort] is filled with really fun people,” said Thomas, who has been working at the course for two years.

“There’s good food, good golf and it’s just a really nice atmosphere.”

The Bar & Grille is cozy and casual, has lively music, sports on multiple large screen TVs, great drinks and ear-to-ear smiles flashing you from every angle.

To get a taste of the best of both worlds, visit The Ledge at Gold Canyon, and expansive patio with and outdoor bar featuring a combination of menu selections from Kokopelli’s and The Bar & Grill. Enjoy the Arizona warm weather, sunshine and majestic views while dining and drinking like royalty.

Gold Canyon also hosts banquets, weddings and other functions with capacity to host parties up to 200. Their banquet area encompasses an area of over 10,000 feet and uses the area from the Bar & Grill and The Ledge.

While the men are on the golf course, women can enjoy a full range of treatments at The Spa at Gold Canyon Golf Resort. Directly on the property, the spa offers massages of all types and length—even an “Expectant Mother” massage—facials, waxing, skincare, hair, nails or any combination of these. The Spa offers packages to give you a full-body treatment that will help you feel your best ever.

There is no question that Gold Canyon is unpretentious and relaxing, stocked with all the necessities and luxuries to enjoy a weekend getaway. From friendly staff to beautiful views, cozy rooms to prestine golf, there really is no better stay and play experience in the Phoenix area.
