How to Plan a Scottsdale Golf Trip: A Local’s 90-Day Checklist

2020 Arizona Golf Overseed

Ask your golf buddies to plan a Scottsdale golf trip and most of them start in the wrong place: the courses. They fall in love with a lineup of golf courses that include — TPC, Troon North, We-Ko-Pa.  With only afterward asking when they’re going and how the tee times actually get booked. Do it in that order and you pay more, play worse times of day, and discover problems an operator would have flagged in the first phone call. So here’s the sequence we use after 25 years of booking these golf trips: dates first, booking windows second, courses third, everything else last. Work it about 90 days out and the whole thing falls into place.

Start with the calendar, because the desert has three seasons and they price completely differently. January through March is peak: 70-degree days, $200–$400+ rounds at the marquee courses, and tee times that vanish weeks ahead. April through May is the sweet spot for most groups — warm, cheaper, and the Bermuda is perfect. Then there’s right now: mid-October, the peak of overseed season. This week, a meaningful share of Valley courses are either closed or running cart-path-only on fresh ryegrass, which means the cheapest-looking October tee times come with the worst conditions. Always check each course’s overseed schedule before you book fall dates, and prefer courses that are at least two weeks past their reopening. June through September is summer golf — 50–60% off peak pricing, but 105°+ heat that turns every round into an endurance event. Using a golf package provider takes the stress out of wondering about all course seasons and conditions when you are planning your Scottsdale golf trip.

Next, understand how booking windows actually work, because this is where most DIY planners get blindsided. Public tee-time windows at the marquee courses can be as short as 7 to 30 days out — not the 90 days most guides vaguely promise. Resort guests unlock 60–90-day windows with tee priority, which is one of the quiet arguments for a resort stay. And premium morning slots disappear within minutes of release. One more trap worth knowing: TPC Scottsdale requires a forecaddie on the Stadium Course from January through April and November through December — figure roughly $90–$135 per golfer for the forecaddie plus gratuity, a line item nobody mentions until the confirmation email arrives.

While you’re on the calendar, flag the WM Phoenix Open window. The 2027 edition runs February 8–14 at TPC Scottsdale, and general admission tickets just went on sale (GA $75 Wednesday/Thursday/Sunday, $125 Friday/Saturday, Ford Free Days Monday and Tuesday, per wmphoenixopen.com). But here’s what the guides skip: the Stadium Course is disrupted by grandstand construction and teardown for weeks before and after the tournament itself. If you’re coming for the Open, book lodging and tee times now. If you’re not, steer clear of early February entirely — you’ll pay tournament-adjacent pricing without seeing any tournament.

Now — and only now — pick your courses, and sequence them by wallet tier instead of by prestige. The lineup that works for most foursomes: arrival-day twilight round at a value course (Talking Stick’s O’odham or TPC’s Champions course, both near the airport so nobody burns half a day in transit), a signature premium round the next morning (Troon North, We-Ko-Pa, Grayhawk Raptor), a fun value round mid-trip (Papago’s big skyline-view greens are ideal), and one more premium round to close. But price twilight rounds against the sunset, not just the rack rate. A 1:30 p.m. January tee time at $85 sounds like a deal until you realize the sun sets around 5:30 and a 4.5-hour pace puts you finishing in the dark. In May, that same twilight tee time is the best value in golf.

Where to stay depends on the group’s makeup, and this is where the guides get vague. Old Town puts you in the nightlife but adds 25–30 minutes of driving to the North Scottsdale courses. North Scottsdale puts you near Troon North, Grayhawk, and TPC but the evenings are quiet. The Kierland/Talking Stick corridor is the compromise — central, walkable, and 15 minutes from both. For four golfers, two resort rooms work. For eight or more, a vacation rental south of Shea or on the Phoenix side of the border often runs $100–$150 per person per night — but you’ll trade on-site dining and spa access for a pool, a kitchen, and savings that fund an extra round.

Overseeding
Group logistics deserve their own paragraph because this is where trips quietly fall apart. If golfers are flying in from different cities, don’t plan golf on arrival day unless everyone’s landing before noon — lost golf clubs are common enough that we treat arrival-day golf as a bonus, not a plan. Golf bags eat cargo space, so size vehicles up: two midsize SUVs often beat one large SUV for a foursome once bags are factored in, and groups of 12–16 should price a 15-passenger van against splitting across rentals. Set a group rule to meet 90 minutes before tee times, and if you’re 12 or more, ask about shotgun starts — many courses accommodate them, and nobody wants to wrangle four staggered tee times across a resort.

Finally, who actually books the golf matters more than people think. For premium courses in peak season, have someone ready the moment booking windows open; the best morning slots genuinely go in minutes. And if the whole sequence sounds like work, that’s because it is — it’s the single biggest reason groups hand the planning to a local operator instead. They have the ability to get the tee times in sooner at a better price.

That’s the honest 90-day checklist: pick your season, learn the booking windows, dodge the Open build window, sequence your courses by tier, match lodging to your group, and sweat the logistics. Do it in that order and you’ll play the right courses at the right time for the right price. Do it backwards and you’ll have a great lineup — at twice the cost, at noon, on cart-path-only overseed.
